Home > More on Wine > Wine Evaluation

The evaluation of a wine depends primarily on each individual taste as tasting is not a test - your subjective response is more important than any "right answers."

However several points can be checked to evaluate a wine properly such as,

Does it smell of oak, nuts, spice or fruit? And if of fruit, then what sort?

Does it taste tannic, acidic, soft, rich, lean or oaky?

Does it taste balanced? If not, then why?

Is the finish long or short?

Balance in a wine is essential. Parts of a wine that give it its backbone, such as tannin and acidity, need to be balanced by fruit and sweetness. A wine that is all fruit and sweetness will be flabby and one that is all tannin and acidity will be tough or hard.

The bottom line is that Wine that tastes good to you is good wine. A good wine should always give pleasure. It should smell good, taste even better, and be smooth and satisfying by itself and/or with whatever you're eating.
